"乃", "乃至", and "甚至" represent three distinct grammatical tools in advanced Chinese:
(1) "乃" (nǎi): inherited from classical Chinese with two main functions—(a) a solemn copula meaning "is indeed / constitutes" (= 是/就是), used in mottos, maxims, and formal definitions (e.g., 教育乃国之根本, 失败乃成功之母); (b) a classical adverb meaning "only then" (= 才).
(2) "乃至" (nǎizhì — and even up to): a formal conjunction placed between coordinate nouns/phrases to expand scope from smaller to larger (e.g., 中国乃至全世界, 个人乃至社会)

•乃 (= 是) is reserved for maxims/mottos; 乃至 expands noun scope from small to large; 甚至 highlights an extreme action or degree.

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Replacing 是 with classical 乃 in ordinary everyday sentences (e.g., *我乃学生): sounds comically archaic.

•Confusing 乃至 (ascending scope between nouns) with 甚至 (before a verb phrase/clause to highlight an extreme action).

•Using 乃至 between two items that do not form an ascending hierarchy of scale or scope.

•Placing 乃至 at the start of a standalone sentence instead of between coordinate items in a series.
