Result & Degree Conjunctions: 以致, 以至, 以至于 (So Much So That)

Pattern

• Clause 1（太 / 过分 / 严重…），以致 + Result（tiêu cực）
• Clause 1，以至 / 以至于 + Result

Usage

• Although pronounced identically, 以致, 以至, and 以至于 have distinct orthographic and semantic roles in HSK 7–9:
• (1) 以致 ("with the unfortunate result that / consequently"): written with 致 ("to cause/bring about"), it strictly introduces an unwanted, negative outcome caused by the first clause (often containing degree words like 太, 过分, 严重: 他工作太忙，以致忽略了家人).
• (2) 以至 ("up to / to the extent that"): written with 至 ("to reach/arrive"), it indicates an extension of time, scope, or degree, or a natural outcome resulting from escalating intensity (neutral, positive, or severe: 进步明显，以至超过预期; 天气炎热，以至许多人中暑).

   Tā gōngzuò tài máng, yǐzhì hūlüè le jiārén.

   He was so busy with work that he neglected his family.

   天气炎热,以至许多人中暑。

   Tiānqì yánrè, yǐzhì xǔduō rén zhòngshǔ.

   The weather was scorching hot, to the extent that many people suffered heatstroke.
