How to Take the HSK 5 Exam, Step by Step

1Listening

  • Use the few seconds before each question to read the options or pictures and predict the topic.
  • Each recording is played only once: mark keywords immediately and move on from hard questions.
  • Watch out for numbers, times, places and negations (不, 没) – the usual traps.

2Reading

  • Read the question first, then look for the information in the text.
  • Fill-in-the-blank: decide which part of speech is needed (noun, verb, measure word…) before choosing.
  • Budget your time per question; skip a slow one, mark it and come back later.

3Writing

  • Sentence ordering: find the subject and predicate first, then place adverbials and complements.
  • Sentences and essays: keep sentences short and correct, use all given words, avoid characters you’re unsure of.
  • Save the last 2–3 minutes to check characters and punctuation.

Tips for HSK preparation

  • Master the word list of your level before doing mock tests — most listening and reading questions are built on it.

Scoring and Passing Score

Each skill is worth up to 100 points, 300 in total; 180 points is a pass. There is no minimum per section and wrong answers are not penalized, so never leave a question blank.
