"于" (yú) is a classical preposition with rich functions in modern journalistic and academic writing, most commonly fusing after a verb or adjective:
(1) Location or time ("in / at / on"): 位于 (located in), 处于 (be in a state of), 出生于 (born in), 毕业于 (graduated from), 始于 (began in), 止于 (ended at).
(2) Origin or source ("from")

•In "V/Adj + 于 + N" compounds (位于, 源于, 毕业于, 高于), the preposition 于 always stands AFTER the verb or adjective.

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Placing "于 + Place" before a verb like 在 (*于上海位于 -> 位于上海).

•Using single-character 于 after everyday colloquial verbs (*吃于食堂 / *睡于床上 -> 在食堂吃 / 睡在床上).

•Expanding a bound disyllabic "V + 于" word into a three-character phrase (*位置于 -> 位于; *起源于 is fine, but *来于 is usually 来自于/来源于).

•Confusing the syntactic position of 于 (post-verbal complement: 毕业于北大) with 在 (pre-verbal adverbial: 在北大学习).
