Usage

• 进而 and 从而 are two high-frequency written conjunctions in HSK 7–9 economic, academic, and political prose that differ in logical relation:
• (1) 进而 ("and then proceed to / going a step further"): expresses progressive advancement (递进) from an initial step to a deeper or subsequent deliberate action, usually performed by the same subject (先了解问题，进而找出解决办法 — "first understand the problem, and then go on to find a solution").
• (2) 从而 ("thereby / thus / consequently"): expresses a means-to-result or cause-to-effect link (因果), where the first clause states a policy, method, or action and the second clause states the resulting improvement or impact (加大研发投入，从而提升了竞争力).

   我们要先了解问题,进而找出解决办法。

   Wǒmen yào xiān liǎojiě wèntí, jìn'ér zhǎochū jiějué bànfǎ.

   We must first understand the problem, and then go on to find a solution.

   公司加大研发投入,从而提升了竞争力。

   Gōngsī jiādà yánfā tóurù, cóng'ér tíshēngle jìngzhēnglì.

   The company increased its R&D investment, thereby enhancing its competitiveness.

   通过学习,我们能掌握知识,进而改变命运。

   Tōngguò xuéxí, wǒmen néng zhǎngwò zhīshi, jìn'ér gǎibiàn mìngyùn.

   Through learning, we can master knowledge and then go on to change our destiny.
