(1) "凭" (píng — by virtue of / relying on): monosyllabic and concise, typically followed by nouns of personal effort, conscience, or strength: 凭努力, 凭良心, 凭实力, 凭直觉, and fixed phrases like 凭一己之力 (single-handedly).
(2) "凭借" (píngjiè — relying on / by virtue of): disyllabic and more formal in modern prose, followed by abstract nouns of advantage, skill, or qualification: 凭借经验, 凭借优秀的服务, 凭借自身优势.

•Confusing 凭借 (internal strength/merit) with 借助 (external tool/assistance, like a telescope or someone else's help).

•Following 凭 or 凭借 directly with a bare action verb (*凭做 -> 凭努力 / 凭借行动).

•Confusing derogatory 仗着/倚仗 (presuming upon privilege to bully/slack off) with positive/neutral 凭/凭借.
