关于 vs 对于guānyú vs duìyú

Distinguishing Prepositions 关于 (guānyú - about) and 对于 (duìyú - toward/regarding)

Meaning: 关于: about (topic/scope); 对于: toward/regarding (target/attitude)

Pattern

Both 关于 and 对于 are high-frequency prepositions in HSK 5, but they differ in function and syntax: (1) Meaning: 关于 ("about / concerning") introduces a topic or scope of discussion (关于这本书，我们下次再讨论吧), whereas 对于 ("toward / regarding") identifies the specific target toward which the subject holds an attitude or directs an action (我对于汉语很感兴趣).
(2) Word order: A phrase with 关于 must stand at the BEGINNING of a sentence (before the subject) or serve as a modifier/title (关于环境保护的问题); it cannot stand after the subject (*我关于汉语很感兴趣 is wrong).
In contrast, 对于 can stand either before or after the subject (对于这个问题，大家很关心 / 大家对于这个问题很关心)

•关于 can only precede the subject (or form a title), whereas 对于 can stand before or after the subject.

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Placing 关于 after the subject with an attitude verb (*我关于这件事很关心 instead of 我对/对于这件事很关心).

•Using 对于 alone to form a book/article title about a topic (where 关于 should be used).
