Pattern

• 对(于) + Person/Noun phrase + 来说 / 而言，Clause

Usage

• 对…来说 (common in both speech and writing) and 对…而言 (more formal and written) mean "for [someone] / from the perspective of [someone]".
• They stand either at the start of a sentence (followed by a comma) or after the topic/subject.
• The main clause typically expresses an evaluation or significance (e.g., 很重要, 是个挑战, 是一件快乐的事).
• Do not omit 来说 or 而言 when expressing "for someone, something is..." (*对我，学习汉语很有趣 is unnatural; say 对我来说，学习汉语很有趣).

Examples

   对我来说，学习汉语是一件快乐的事。

   Duì wǒ láishuō, xuéxí Hànyǔ shì yī jiàn kuàilè de shì.

   For me, learning Chinese is a joyful thing.

   对学生而言，认真听课是非常重要的。

   Duì xuésheng éryán, rènzhēn tīngkè shì fēicháng zhòngyào de.

   As far as students are concerned, listening attentively in class is extremely important.

   这个问题对我们公司来说是个挑战。

   Zhège wèntí duì wǒmen gōngsī láishuō shì gè tiǎozhàn.
