Pattern

This trio of fixed discourse markers introduces a concluding statement in formal essays and HSK 6 writing:
(1) "总之" (zǒngzhī — in short / in a word): the most versatile, suitable for both speech and writing to introduce a concise takeaway.
(2) "总而言之" (zǒng'éryánzhī — all in all / to sum up): a balanced four-character idiom more literary and emphatic than "总之", ideal for the closing paragraph of an essay.
(3) "综上所述" (zòng shàng suǒ shù — summing up the above): the most formal and academic of the three, specifically used at the end of research papers, analytical reports, or multi-point essays after several arguments have been laid out.
All three stand at the beginning of a sentence followed by a comma.

•All three stand at the start of a concluding sentence followed by a comma; 综上所述 is only used after preceding arguments have been presented.

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Using 综上所述 in the opening paragraph of an essay: it literally means "summing up what was stated above" and can only conclude.

•Using academic 综上所述 or 总而言之 in casual everyday chit-chat.

•Omitting the comma after 总而言之 / 综上所述 / 总之 at the start of the sentence.
