Meaning: And (coordinating) / Yet, but (adversative) / In order to (purpose with 为…而…)

Pattern

"而" (ér) is a multifunctional conjunction inherited from classical Chinese whose exact meaning depends on context:
(1) Coordinating / parallel ("and"): connects two adjectives or phrases of the same grammatical category and similar polarity, e.g., 勤奋而聪明 (diligent and smart), 美丽而善良 (beautiful and kind).
(2) Adversative / contrasting ("yet / but"): e.g., 努力而失败 (work hard yet fail).
(3) Linking an adverbial/action to a subsequent clause: e.g., 默默地工作而从不抱怨

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Linking two grammatically mismatched elements with coordinating 而 (e.g., an adjective and a noun).

•Redundantly stacking 而 and 但是 together in the same clause (e.g., *而但是).

•Using single-character coordinating 而 in casual spoken chat instead of 又…又… or 可是.
