Structure 一方面…另一方面…: On the one hand... on the other hand...

Pattern

• (Subject) + 一方面 + Verb phrase，另一方面 + (也/还) + Verb phrase

Usage

• 一方面…另一方面… ("on the one hand..., on the other hand...") presents two coexisting facets, reasons, or actions related to a topic.
• Unlike English "on the other hand" (which is mostly contrastive), in Chinese the two clauses can be EITHER complementary/parallel (学习汉语一方面要多说，另一方面要多写) OR contrasting (这个城市一方面发展很快，另一方面也面临许多问题).
• The second clause often includes 也 or 还, and both clauses should maintain parallel grammatical structures.
• Never say *还方面; the fixed form is 另一方面 (or sometimes simply 一方面…，一方面…).

   学习汉语一方面要多说，另一方面要多写。

   Xuéxí Hànyǔ yī fāngmiàn yào duō shuō, lìng yī fāngmiàn yào duō xiě.

   In learning Chinese, on the one hand you must speak more, and on the other hand you must write more.

   他不来，一方面是因为生病了，另一方面是因为太忙。

   Tā bù lái, yī fāngmiàn shì yīnwèi shēngbìng le, lìng yī fāngmiàn shì yīnwèi tài máng.

   He isn't coming, on the one hand because he got sick, and on the other hand because he is too busy.
