Structure 不仅…而且… (bùjǐn... érqiě...): Not only... but also...

Pattern

• Subject + 不仅 + A，而且 + B
• 不仅 + Subject 1 + A，而且 + Subject 2 + (也) + B

Usage

• 不仅…而且… (along with variants 不仅…还… and 不光…还…) is the core progressive conjunction pair in HSK 5.
• Both clauses must share the same positive or negative orientation, with the second clause adding a stronger or broader point.
• Subject placement rule: (1) Same subject -> place the subject BEFORE 不仅 (她不仅漂亮，而且很聪明); (2) Different subjects -> place the first subject AFTER 不仅 and the second subject AFTER 而且 (不仅大人喜欢这个节目，而且小孩也喜欢).
• Never pair 不仅 with 但是.

Examples

   Tā bùjǐn piàoliang, érqiě hěn cōngmíng.
