Meaning: Complement expressing closure/contact, achieving an objective, or forming emotional attachment

Pattern

In HSK 5, the directional complement 上 (shàng) is frequently tested for its diverse abstract connotations: (1) Achieving a desired goal or standard, usually through perseverance (e.g., 考上大学 - admitted to university; 买上房子 - managed to buy a house; 赶上 - catch up with; 称得上 - can be counted as); (2) Emotional attachment and affection (e.g., 爱上了那个女孩 - fell in love with that girl; 迷上 - become fascinated by; 喜欢上 - grow fond of); (3) Contact, closure, or putting on garments (e.g., 穿上外套 - put on a coat; 关上门 - shut the door; 锁上 - lock up).
Potential forms include 用得上 (can be put to use) and 赶得上 (can make it in time).

•Distinguish “上” (reaching a goal after effort: 考上) from “到” (simple acquisition); use “爱上” for falling in love, never “爱起来”.

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Distinguish 上 from 到: 找到工作 means simply finding a job, while 找上工作 emphasizes landing a job after striving to meet standards.

•Incorrect: 爱起来 → Correct: 爱上 (developing romantic love or attachment requires the complement 上, not 起来).
