Meaning: Complement denoting sensory recognition/discernment or creating something new from nothing

Pattern

In HSK 5, the extended meanings of 出 (chū) and 出来 (chūlái) focus on two abstract transitions from non-existence/hiddenness into reality: (1) Discovery and discernment through cognitive or sensory appraisal (e.g., 看出来 - spot/tell; 听出来 - recognize by voice; 认出来 - recognize someone's identity; 想出来 - figure out/come up with); (2) Creation and innovation from scratch (e.g., 研制出 - develop; 写出 - write out; 想出一个好办法 - devise a good plan).
In potential form, V + 得 + 出来 means “able to discern/produce”, while V + 不 + 出来 means “unable to tell/devise” (e.g., 我看不出来 - I can't tell the difference).

•Potential negation must use “V + 不 + 出来” (not 我不能看出来); distinguish “听出来” (recognize by ear) from “听起来” (sounds like).

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Incorrect: 我不能看出来 → Correct: 我看不出来 (must use the potential complement negative structure V + 不 + 出来).

•Confusing 出来 with 起来: 听出来 means to identify by hearing, whereas 听起来 means to sound like / give an impression.
