Pattern

• 只要 + Condition，就 + Result
• 只有 + Condition，才 + Result

Usage

• These two paired conditional patterns are studied together because they delineate precise logical conditions in Chinese: \ (1) 只要...就...
• (zhǐyào... jiù...): Expresses a SUFFICIENT condition ('as long as...', 'provided that...').
• Meeting this condition is enough to trigger the result, though other conditions might also work: 只要你努力，就能成功 (As long as you work hard, you will succeed).
• \ (2) 只有...才...
• (zhǐyǒu... cái...): Expresses an EXCLUSIVE NECESSARY condition ('only if...', 'only when...').
• This condition is indispensable and unique — without it, the outcome is impossible:

   Zhǐyào nǐ nǔlì xuéxí, jiù néng xué hǎo Hànyǔ.

   As long as you study hard, you will be able to learn Chinese well.

   Zhǐyǒu nǔlì xuéxí, cáinéng xué hǎo Hànyǔ.
