Pattern

呢 (ne) is a neutral-tone modal particle with two main uses in HSK 1:
1.
FOLLOW-UP ELLIPTICAL QUESTION “X 呢?” ('And what about X?'): used when the context has already been established so you don't need to repeat the full question.
Examples: 我是学生，你呢?
(I am a student, and you?), 我喜欢苹果，你呢?
(I like apples, what about you?).

•The short pattern “X 呢?” is used for follow-up questions in conversation. Never combine with 吗.

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Using 呢 instead of 吗 in a yes/no question: WRONG 你好呢? → RIGHT 你好吗?

•Using 呢 and 吗 together in the same sentence: WRONG.
