Modal particle 吧 (ba) for suggestions and guesses

Meaning: Let's... / How about... / ...right? (suggestion or supposition)

Pattern

吧 (ba) is a versatile neutral-tone sentence-final particle in HSK 1 with four main uses:
1.
SUGGESTIONS / INVITATIONS ('Let's...'): 我们走吧!
(Let's go!), 我们吃饭吧!
(Let's eat!).
2.
POLITE REQUESTS / SOFTENED COMMANDS: 坐吧 (Please have a seat), 喝茶吧 (Have some tea)

•吧 = suggestion/request/guess. Neutral tone. Never combine with 吗.

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Combining 吧 and 吗 in the same sentence: WRONG 你是学生吗吧? → choose only one.

•Confusing 吧 (confirming a guess) with 吗 (asking a pure question): 你是学生吧? ≠ 你是学生吗?.
