朝 (cháo) – towards, facing

Pattern

朝 + Place / Person + Verb
Noun + 朝 + 东 / 南 / 西 / 北

Usage

A preposition marking the direction an action goes towards or the direction something faces (a window 朝南 faces south).

Examples

他朝我挥了挥手。
Tā cháo wǒ huī le huī shǒu.
He waved at me.
2
我喜欢这套房子，因为卧室朝南。
Wǒ xǐhuan zhè tào fángzi, yīnwèi wòshì cháo nán.
I like this flat because the bedroom faces south.

Notes

朝 is close to 向 and 往. 往 is for movement only; 朝 / 向 also work with non-movement actions (朝他笑), and 向 can be abstract (向他学习).
