Structure: 如果……(的话)，就…… (If..., Then...)

Meaning: Presents a hypothetical condition in the first clause and the resulting outcome in the second.

Pattern

如果 + Hypothesis + (的话), Subject + 就 + Result

Usage

The particle “的话” can optionally conclude the if-clause to soften tone.
The second clause typically includes “就”.

Examples

如果明天下雨的话，我们就不去爬山了。
Rúguǒ míngtiān xiàyǔ dehuà, wǒmen jiù bù qù páshān le.
If it rains tomorrow, we won't go mountain climbing.

你如果有时间，就来我家玩儿吧。
Nǐ rúguǒ yǒu shíjiān, jiù lái wǒ jiā wánr ba.
If you have time, come over to my place to hang out.

Notes

In spoken Chinese, “如果” can be omitted, leaving just “...的话，就...”.

被Indicates that the subject receives the action (passive), often with an undesirable, unfortunate connotation.
