Open-Ended Listing Markers: 之类 / 等等 / 之流

Meaning: Things like (之类 — neutral category) / Et cetera (等等) / Ilk, sort of people (之流 — derogatory)

Pattern

HSK 7-9 tests the semantic, syntactic, and evaluative differences among open-ended listing markers:
(1) "A、B + 之类 (+ 的 + Category Noun)" (things like A and B): neutral exemplification of a category, typically followed by "的 + general noun" (e.g., 面条、饺子之类的北方食物).
(2) "A、B、C + 等等 / 等" (A, B, C, et cetera): the most universal marker indicating a non-exhaustive list.
Monosyllabic "等" is preferred in terse legal/formal prose, while "等等" works in both speech and writing.

我喜欢吃面条、饺子之类的北方食物。
Wǒ xǐhuan chī miàntiáo, jiǎozi zhī lèi de běifāng shíwù.
I like eating northern foods such as noodles and dumplings.

会议讨论了预算、人事、市场等等问题。
Huìyì tǎolùnle yùsuàn, rénshì, shìchǎng děngděng wèntí.
The meeting discussed issues such as budget, personnel, marketing, and so on.

Xiàng tā nà zhǒng lìyù xūnxīn zhī liú de rén, bùkě shēn jiāo.
One must not form deep friendships with people of his ilk who are blinded by greed.

•之类 is neutral (usually 之类的 + category N); 等等 means "et cetera"; 之流 is strongly derogatory and used ONLY for despised people.

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Using derogatory 之流 for neutral objects or respected people (*科学家之流 -> 科学家们 / 科学家等人).

•Omitting 的 when 之类 modifies a following category noun (*面条、饺子之类北方食物 -> 面条、饺子之类的北方食物).

•Appending 等等 after a single unique proper noun that does not represent a multi-item list.

•Failing to distinguish terse formal 等 (used before a head noun in official prose: 预算、人事等问题) from reduplicated 等等.
