Literary Degree Constructions: Adj + 不堪, V + 不已, 不至于 + V

Pattern

• Adjective（tiêu cực）+ 不堪
• Verb（cảm xúc）+ 不已
• Subject +（还）不至于 + Verb phrase

Usage

• These three literary degree structures allow much finer nuance than basic 很/非常 in HSK 7–9 descriptive and journalistic prose:
• (1) Adj/V + 不堪 ("utterly / intolerably"): placed AFTER a disyllabic negative adjective or state verb to stress an extreme, wretched degree — 疲惫不堪 (utterly exhausted), 忙碌不堪 (frantically busy), 破损不堪 / 破烂不堪 (in complete disrepair), 拥挤不堪, 痛苦不堪, 狼狈不堪.
• Note that when 不堪 precedes a noun/verb in four-character idioms, it means "cannot bear": 不堪重负, 不堪一击, 不堪入目.

   这一周忙碌不堪,几乎没有休息时间。

   Zhè yī zhōu mánglù bùkān, jīhū méiyǒu xiūxí shíjiān.

   This week has been frantic beyond endurance, with almost no time to rest.

   听到这个消息,他激动不已。

   Tīngdào zhège xiāoxi, tā jīdòng bùyǐ.

   Upon hearing this news, he was thrilled beyond measure.

   虽然有些困难,但还不至于完不成。

   Suīrán yǒuxiē kùnnán, dàn hái bùzhìyú wán bù chéng.

   Although there are some difficulties, it is still not to the point where we cannot finish it.
