Meaning: Even up to (乃至/以至 — ascending scope) vs. To the point that (以至于 — result)

Pattern

"乃至 / 以至 / 以至于" all express progression or extension, but have distinct syntactic roles:
(1) "乃至" (nǎizhì — and even up to): connects coordinate nouns or phrases in ascending order of scope, scale, or level (from small to large, near to far), e.g., 全市乃至全国 (the whole city and even the whole country), 全国乃至全世界.
It is the most formal of the three.
(2) "以至" (yǐzhì): has two uses—(a) synonymous with "乃至" in connecting ascending coordinate items

•乃至 links coordinate phrases expanding in scope from small to large (全国乃至全世界); 以至于 introduces a result clause caused by extreme degree (太…以至于…).

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Using 乃至 instead of 以至于 to introduce a result clause: 乃至 only links coordinate items expanding in scope.

•Using 以至于 between two coordinate nouns (e.g., *全国以至于全世界): use 乃至 or 以至 instead.

•Confusing 乃至 ("even up to") with 至于 ("as for" — topic shifter).
