Separable Verbs (离合词)

Meaning: Verb-object compounds that separate to insert aspect particles or duration

Pattern

Separable verbs (离合词 líhécí) are special two-syllable verbs in Chinese with an internal “Verb + Object” structure.
Because the second syllable already functions as an internal object, they can separate so that aspect particles, duration complements, or qualifiers are inserted between them.
Cardinal rule: NEVER place a direct noun object immediately after a separable verb!
For instance, saying 我见面他 is completely incorrect; you must say 我跟他见面 (I meet with him) or 我见他的面.
Key insertion rules: (1) Aspect particles 了 and 过 are inserted in the middle: 见了面

•Never put an object directly after a separable verb; insert 了/过 and duration in the middle.

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Incorrect: 我见面他。 → Correct: 我跟他见面。 (separable verbs cannot take direct objects)

•Incorrect: 我睡觉了八个小时。 → Correct: 我睡了八个小时的觉。 (duration must be inserted into the separable verb)
