•The time or event inside 自(从)…以来 must be in the past (never future like *自明年以来), and the closing element 以来 cannot be omitted when introducing a fronted temporal frame with 自.
⚠️ Common Mistakes:
•Using 自…以来 with a future time point (e.g., *"自明年以来" — wrong; use 从明年开始/起 for future starting points).
•Omitting 以来 after 自 when forming the temporal frame (e.g., *"自改革开放，中国…" — incomplete without 以来).
•Using monosyllabic 自…以来 in casual everyday chit-chat where 从…到现在 or 自从…以后 is more natural.
•Stuffing an overly long, rambling multi-clause sentence between 自 and 以来 — the element inside the frame should be a concise noun phrase or compact event clause.
