Meaning: How [Adj]! (多么…啊 — general; 何其 — literary/philosophical; 真是 — sincere evaluation)

Pattern

HSK 7-9 requires distinguishing the stylistic nuances of exclamatory adverbs:
(1) "多么 + Adj / VP (+ 啊)!" (how...!): standard and expressive in both spoken and written Chinese (e.g., 多么美好的回忆啊！, 来得多么不易啊！).
(2) "何其 + Adj" (how utterly...!): a classical literary adverb used in essays, speeches, and philosophical reflections to express awe, lament, or irony (e.g., 人生何其短暂, 何其壮观, 何其荒谬).
It typically pairs with disyllabic adjectives and does not take "啊".
(3) "真是 (+ 个) + NP / Adj" (truly is...!): combines exclamation with personal evaluation

•多么 + Adj (+ 啊) is general; 何其 + disyllabic Adj is highly literary/philosophical; 真是 can precede either an adjective or "个 + Noun".

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Using classical 何其 in casual everyday chit-chat (e.g., *今天天气何其热): sounds overly archaic.

•Leaving an independent 多么 + Adj predicate bare without 啊 or a following noun, making the exclamation feel unfinished.

•Confusing formal lyrical 多么 with casual spoken 多 (多冷啊 is casual spoken; 多么不易啊 is more formal/written).

•Placing 多么 directly before a bare noun without an adjective (*多么书 -> 多么好的书).
