Pattern

Both "反而" and "反倒" indicate an outcome that runs counter to normal logic or prior expectations ("on the contrary / instead"):
(1) "反而" (fǎn'ér): standard and formal, widely used in both written and standard spoken Chinese.
(2) "反倒" (fǎndào): slightly more colloquial and expressive than "反而", often carrying a tone of surprise or irony in natural conversation.
Common patterns include "不/没…，反而/反倒…" (not only did it not..., on the contrary it...)

雨下得越大，他反而走得越慢。
Yǔ xià de yuè dà, tā fǎn'ér zǒu de yuè màn.
The heavier the rain fell, the slower he walked instead.

我本想安慰他，反倒被他安慰了。
Wǒ běn xiǎng ānwèi tā, fǎndào bèi tā ānwèi le.
I originally intended to comfort him, but ended up being comforted by him instead.

•Emphasizes a paradoxical reversal of expectation (不…反而…; 越…反而越…); 反而 is more formal, 反倒 more colloquial.

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Using 反而/反倒 for a simple contrast without a reversal of expectation: use 但是 or 可是 instead.

•Using 反而 when the second clause logically follows from the first clause.

•Stacking 但是 and 反而 together right at the start of the same clause (choose one or place 反而 after the subject).
