Meaning: Why must / Not necessarily / Bound to / Must by all means

Pattern

These four "-bì" adverbs have very distinct meanings despite sharing the morpheme "必":
(1) "何必" (hébì — why must / there is no need to): uses a gentle rhetorical question to advise that an action is unnecessary (e.g., 何必如此, 何必生气).
(2) "未必" (wèibì — not necessarily): expresses doubt or partial negation, contrasting with "一定" (e.g., 未必是事实).
(3) "势必" (shìbì — bound to / inevitably)

Dōu shì xiǎoshì, hébì shēngqì ne?
It's all trivial matters; why get angry?

Tā shuō de huà wèibì dōu shì zhēn de.
What he said is not necessarily all true.

•何必 = why bother (rhetorical); 未必 = not necessarily (doubt); 势必 = bound to (objective trend); 务必 = be sure to (imperative request).

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Using 务必 for objective predictions: use 势必 or 必然 instead (务必 is only for imperative requests).

•Using 势必 to give orders or requests: use 务必 instead.
