Pattern

不但…而且… (búdàn... érqiě...) is the primary progressive conjunction pair in HSK 3, used to add positive or negative information in the second clause for stronger emphasis ('not only... but also...').
Example: 他不但聪明，而且很努力 (He is not only smart, but also very hardworking).
SUBJECT POSITION RULE: 1.
When both clauses share the SAME subject, the subject is placed BEFORE 不但: Subject + 不但…, 而且….

When the two clauses have DIFFERENT subjects, each subject is placed AFTER 不但

Tā búdàn cōngmíng, érqiě hěn nǔlì.
He is not only smart, but also very hardworking.

•The position of the subject changes depending on whether both clauses share the same subject or have different subjects.

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Repeating the same subject before 而且: WRONG 他不但聪明, 他而且努力 → RIGHT 他不但聪明, 而且很努力.

•Confusing 不但…而且… (progression) with 虽然…但是… (concession/contrast).
