Pattern

很 (hěn) is the most common degree adverb in HSK 1, placed before an adjective.
Although its dictionary meaning is “very”, in simple affirmative sentences it often functions as a neutral grammatical linker without strong emphasis.
CORE RULE: In Chinese, you generally do not say “Subject + bare Adjective” in a simple statement; without a degree adverb like 很, 我高 implies a comparison ('I am taller [than someone]').
Saying 我很高 is the natural way to say “I am tall”.
Remember: NEVER use 是

•In affirmative sentences, 很 often acts as a grammatical filler and doesn“t always need to be translated as ”very'.

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Using 是 before an adjective: WRONG 我是高 → RIGHT 我很高.

•Omitting 很 in a simple affirmative statement: 我高 (sounds incomplete/comparative) → 我很高 (natural).
