Negative sentence with 不 (bù)

Meaning: Not / do not (present, future, habitual negation)

Pattern

Subject + 不 + Verb/Adjective

Usage

不 (bù) is the most commonly used negation word in HSK 1, negating actions or states in the present, future, or as habits.
Its position is always BEFORE the verb or adjective it negates.
Tone sandhi rule: 不 originally carries the 4th tone (bù), but when followed by another 4th-tone syllable, it changes to the 2nd tone (bú).
For example: 不是 (bú shì), 不去 (bú qù), 不要 (bú yào).
Before 1st, 2nd, or 3rd tones, it keeps the 4th tone: 不吃 (bù chī),

Notes

•Tone sandhi: 不 + 4th tone → bú. Used for present, future, or habits.

⚠️ Common Mistakes:

•Using 不 for completed past actions: WRONG 昨天我不吃 → RIGHT 昨天我没吃.

•Putting 不 in the wrong position: WRONG 我吃不饭 → RIGHT 我不吃饭.

Core difference between 不 and 没: 不 is used for present/future/habitual actions or subjective refusal, while 没 (méi) is used to negate past actions or the verb 有.

For instance, 我不吃 (I don't eat / I won't eat) differs from 我没吃 (I haven't eaten / I didn't eat).

不 can also be used alone as a short refusal: 不, 我不去.

Or combined in an affirmative-negative question: 你去不去?

(Are you going or not?), a very natural everyday question pattern.

I don't like apples.
